Korean Traditional Cuisine Level 1:  Galbitang (Short Rib Soup) at Hanyang Sikdang

Galbitang, one of the traditional Korean dishes, is a soup made of beef short ribs. Today, we are introducing you to Hanyang Sikdang that serves galbitang in Pyeongtaek. It is a classic place that has appeared on television numerous times. Hanyang Sikdang has been selected as a “Good Restaurant” by Pyeongtaek City and a “Safe Restaurant” designated by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. Only those that comply with the disease prevention guidelines against COVID-19 and are operated with excellent sanitation are entitled to be designated as “Safe Restaurant”.

Hanyang Sikdang serves various dishes. Galbitang is priced at 12,000 won, seolleongtang (ox bones and meat soup) 9,000 won, kkorigomtang (oxtail soup) 15,000 won, and doganitang (ox knee soup) 13,000 won.

When you order, the staff gives you scissors and tongs. Take out some kimchi and kkakdugi (radish kimchi) as much as you want and cut them up to eat.

Galbitang is served with a bowl of rice. You can cut the meat and enjoy it with rice on the side or put rice in the soup and slurp them in one bite. Here’s a tip: try dipping the meat in the sauce. It’s very delicious.

Hanyang Sikdang is open from 7:00 to 20:30 from Monday to Saturday. They have a break between 14:00 and 15:00.  Please check the hours before visiting. If you’re driving, don’t worry, there’s plenty of parking space in front.

Because Hanyang Sikdang is very popular, you may need to wait in line. It’s best to arrive early for a hassle-free dining experience.
