It is illegal to drive in Korea using a driver’s license from another country. Nevertheless, if you have a foreign driver’s license that is issued by the government authority of your country then you can request for an exchange of driver’s license in Korea as follows.
<How to exchange driver’s license>
1. Review of documents (checked by embassy, etc.)
- Required documents include, foreign driver’s license, original passport, alien registration card, certificate of entry and exit, and three color photos (3.5cm*4.5cm) taken within past six months.
You may be requested to submit additional documents, depending on circumstances.
2. Aptitude test (health check) and written exam
- Health checks costs 7,000 KRW for the type 1 large/special licenses and 6,000 KRW for other licenses.
If your license is issued in an Acknowledged Country (AC), written exams will be exempted.
It costs 10,000 KRW to take the written exam and 8,000 KRW to issue driver’s license.
3. Issuance of exchange
When applying for the exchange, your foreign driver’s license must be valid and officially issued by the government authority. Temporary license, learner’s or driving permit are not allowed. Applying to driver’s license exchange is available at all regional driver’s license examination offices in Korea. Although US is an AC, written exams are mandatory for those who obtained the driver’s license in the state of Oregon or Idaho.
