There are several diseases that you have to be especially more careful during the summer. Today we will learn about vibrio vulnificus sepsis. This disease starts breaking out in May or June when the temperature of ocean water rises to 18 degrees Celsius or higher. It appears most frequently in August and September. The infection is commonly caused by eating fish or shellfish, or when swimming in the ocean with open wounds on the skin.
Symptoms of vibrio vulnificus sepsis begin after a short latent period of a day or two, followed by acute fevers, chills, vomit, etc. If such symptoms occur after eating seafood, you should visit the nearest hospital and receive treatment.
The mortality rate of vibrio vulnificus sepsis can rise to up to 50% in high risk groups such as people with liver diseases, diabetes, low immune functions, alcohol addicts, etc. When exposed to vibrio vulnificus sepsis, you must receive antibiotics for treatment.
To avoid vibrio vulnificus sepsis, you should cook your seafood completely and avoid swimming in the contaminated water when having open wounds. If you do come into contact with seawater, wash your skin with soap and clean water!
It is easy to fall victim to various diseases in the summer such as food poisoning and heat-related diseases. We should all be especially careful this year as COVID-19 is still ongoing! We hope you spend your summer healthy and safe:)
