Tips on How to Avoid Raynaud's Phenomenon(Cold Hands & Feet) This Winter Season

Have you ever heard of ‘Raynaud's Phenomenon’? It is a condition medically defined as decreased and improper blood circulation to the outer parts of the body, which can cause a numb sensation. It mainly occurs when exposed to the cold or can even be triggered through stressful situations.

This phenomenon, also known as ‘cold hands & feet,’ is widely known to affect parts of the body, such as your hands and feet, and can also affect the lips, nose, ears, and other areas throughout the body.

To try and avoid the discomfort and hassle that this condition can bring, here are a few body management and pro tips to help you stay cozy and warm throughout this challenging and cold winter season.

Refrain From Going Out in the Cold One of the leading triggering causes of this condition is prolonged exposure to cold outdoor temperatures. Though some of us may work, live or play easily within such harsh environments, it carries the danger of frostbite and possibly permanent damage to hands and feet.

Use an Electric Heating Pad / Portable Heating Pad Whether you’re at home or on the go, one of the best ways to stay warm is the use of a heating pad! Coming in many different shapes, styles, and sizes, it’s almost impossible not to find a heating pad that won’t fit your heating needs!

Maintain a Daily Exercise Routine Making the time to properly get your body moving and exercising promotes much-needed blood circulation to warm your body up! Even with some simple stretches or even walking in place, anything to get your body and blood on the move!

Wear Warm Clothing Wearing typical winter clothing items such as a warm hat, scarf, gloves, fuzzy socks, knit sweaters, turtlenecks, coats, and leggings(etc.) should help keep in all that necessary body heat. Refrain from wearing any tight clothing.

Foot Bath & Massage Placing your feet in warm water or even getting a foot massage for 20 minutes is another effective way to help promote healthy blood flow to the area and eventually to other parts of your body.

Consume Warm Beverages & Foods Consuming warm, healthy meals and warm beverages such as tea or coffee can also help promote better blood circulation within your body. Try to eat foods rich in iron, vitamin B12, and folate. Avoid things such as smoking, as nicotine inhibits blood flow to hands and feet, and alcohol consumption.

Reduce the Stress When you get stressed, your body is prone to push blood toward your core instead of other areas of the body, including your hands and feet. Relax and reduce anything that may be causing over-stress.
