Discover Rich History and Architecture of Jinwi Local Confucian School

Jinwi Local Confucian School, located in Pyeongtaek, is a historical Confucian school dating back to the Joseon Dynasty in Korea. It served as a public educational institution where locals were educated and ancestral rites were held for Confucius and ancient sages. The school comprised several significant buildings, such as Daeseongjeon Hall, where Confucius is worshipped, Dongmu House and Seomu House for worshipping ancient sages, Myeongryundang Hall for students to learn, and Dongjae and Seojae Quarters for student residence.

Although the school was damaged during the Manchu Invasion, it has undergone numerous repairs and renovations over the years. Most of the buildings, including Daeseongjeon Hall, were restored in the late 19th century. More recently, Dongjae and Seojae were rebuilt in 1987, and Myeongryundang Hall was reconstructed in 1992.

Today, several of the original structures of Jinwi Local Confucian School remain, including Daeseongjeon Hall, Myeongryundang Hall, Dongjae, Seojae, the outer three-door gate, the inner three-door gate, and a hongsalmun. The front and back of the building exhibit various architectural elements, such as yiikgong, gyeopcheoma, mulikgong, and hotcheoma, which demonstrate the style of the 18th century. The roof of the building is shaped like the Chinese character for "human.“
