Pyeongtaek has become the 392nd member of the 'International Cities of Peace'. The International Cities of Peace is a non-governmental organization (NGO) established in 2009 to promote global peace culture. In 2017, Cities of Peace achieved Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council for NGOs.
Members of the International Cities of Peace engage in activities to establish a culture of peace in local communities and promote peace policies and culture through mutual cooperation among member countries.
With Pyeongtaek's membership, the International Cities of Peace now has a total of 392 member cities spanning six continents and 72 countries.
The Mayor of Pyeongtaek, Jeong Jang-seon stated, "We will continue to pursue national security and international peace and strive for Pyeongtaek to be an International City of Peace where citizens, U.S. military personnel, and foreigners residing in Pyeongtaek coexist harmoniously.“
Pyeongtaek's membership in the International Cities of Peace marks a significant step towards a more peaceful and cooperative global community. It symbolizes the city's dedication to fostering a culture of harmony and understanding among its diverse inhabitants.
