The Great Train eXpress (GTX) system, renowned for its swift metropolitan connectivity, is poised for expansion into Pyeongtaek City, marking a significant milestone in South Korea's transportation infrastructure.
GTX, distinguished for its high-speed operations exceeding 100km/h, operates through an extensive underground network, traversing depths of 40-50 meters, ensuring efficient and rapid transit between Seoul's urban core and its suburban peripheries.
Pyeongtaek City has embarked on an ambitious initiative to extend the GTX C line in collaboration with neighboring municipalities Hwaseong and Osan, a project initiated back in 2022. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport formalized this endeavor on January 25th, announcing the official extension of both the GTX A and C lines to Pyeongtaek during a public forum.
Forecasts anticipate the emergence of Pyeongtaek-Jije Station as the pivotal transportation nexus of southern Gyeonggi. Bolstered by existing infrastructure such as the SRT and Seoul Metropolitan Subway Line 1, complemented by the forthcoming KTX service from Suwon, and now augmented by the extension of the GTX-A·C lines, the station is poised for enhanced regional connectivity.
This expansion is set to drastically reduce travel times between Pyeongtaek and Gangnam, slashing the journey from its current 90 minutes to a mere half-hour. To materialize this vision, the government is poised to engage in discussions for cost-sharing agreements with local administrations. Pending successful negotiations, construction is slated to commence within the incumbent government's term.
Further advancements are on the horizon, with the impending inauguration of the Seohae Line and Poseung-Pyeongtaek Railroad in the latter half of this year, complemented by the introduction of KTX services from Suwon scheduled for the first half of the ensuing year. The prospective development of the Seohae KTX direct line and the Pyeongtaek Sub Line, facilitating east-west connectivity within Pyeongtaek City, promises to further redefine regional accessibility. Consequently, residents are poised to enjoy seamless access to the Seoul metropolitan area within 30 minutes and the broader Chungcheongnam-do, Gangwon-do, and Gyeonggi regions within an hour.
