Songtan Market, a historical landmark located in the Songtan area of Pyeongtaek, has a rich heritage that dates back to the Korean War. The bustling market was the hub of activity in the morning, serving as a vital source for people's daily needs. It also played a crucial role in supplying goods for the Jung-ang Market, an evening market located across the street.
In 1995, it became a regular market named Songbuk Market. However, due to the confusion with Tongbok Market, the name was changed to Songtan Market in 2017.
The market is open 365 days as a permanent market with over 150 stores primarily selling agricultural products, meats, and seafood. There are also 8 butchers located in the market. In addition, during market days (days ending in 4 and 9), the market has an additional 200 to 250 street vendors.
Songtan Market is dedicated to making the shopping experience enjoyable and convenient for its foreign visitors. They have implemented a comprehensive shopping assistance program, which includes a market tour and personal shoppers. What's more, some vendors have taken the initiative to introduce signage that features both Korean and English product names, ensuring that non-Korean speakers can easily navigate the market.
Every Wednesday, Songtan Market hosts a one-of-a-kind food-focused language and cultural exchange.
