On the Way to Meet the King: A Cultural Event in Pyeongtaek

On Saturday, September 28, 2024, a unique cultural event titled “On the Way to Meet the King" will take place, reviving a traditional ritual that was last performed more than 130 years ago. The event will run from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM, starting at the Paengseong-eup Welfare Center and concluding at the historic Paengseong Gaeksa.

This event is open to all, including both local residents and foreigners, with a participant cap of 900 people on a first-come, first-served basis. Participation is free, and advance registration is available online, though walk-ins are also welcome.

The event features the traditional [Manggwollye] ceremony, where the governor of the old Paengseong-hyeon, accompanied by his officials, visits the Paengseong-eup Gaeksa to perform a bowing ritual in honor of the king in Hanyang. This cultural practice, which was a significant tradition during the Joseon Dynasty, was discontinued during the Japanese occupation. After 130 years, it has been revived as an interactive program, inviting residents to actively engage with this piece of history.

Procession Route:
The 1.7 km route begins at the Paengseong-eup Administrative Welfare Center, passing through Daewon Apartment, Songhwa Elementary School, Umi Apartment, the Paengseong 119 Fire Safety Center, and the Guesa Three-Way Intersection, before concluding at Paengseong Guesa.
