Humans of Pyeongtaek: Germieka's Journey of Family, Self-Discovery, and Staying True to Herself in Pyeongtaek

In the bustling city of Pyeongtaek, where diverse cultures and stories come together, Germieka shares her unique journey of love, family, and self-discovery. Her path, marked by life-changing experiences, offers a glimpse into the power of human connections, personal growth, and the importance of staying true to oneself.

Germieka’s connection to Korea runs deep, having spent part of her childhood here when her father, was stationed in the country. “I came to Korea when I was smaller, in elementary school, with my parents,” she recalls, reflecting on her earlier experiences. Now, many years later, she has returned to Korea, this time with her husband, who also serves in the military.

Their story of meeting is one of modern romance, sparked through the digital world. “We met online when I first got out of grad school,” Germieka explains. After a few years, their paths crossed again on the same platform. “Three years passed, and then I got back online and saw him again. We decided to meet in person, and our first date was memorable,” she says with a smile.

The first date was casual but meaningful. “I had to go to work that day, so we went to the International House of Pancakes for breakfast—IHOP in America,” she shares. “Then we went to Starbucks, and he dropped me off at work. It was important for me to meet him in person, just to make sure he wasn’t a catfish, you know?” she laughs, recalling the nerves of meeting someone online for the first time.

Though love didn’t happen at first sight, their bond grew quickly. “I didn’t know I was going to marry him right away, but after Thanksgiving, I started to see the potential,” she says. On a trip to the Space Needle in Seattle, he surprised her with a proposal. “It was February, Valentine’s Day actually,” she remembers, “I had a feeling something was coming. We were walking around, and I was looking for some vintage jewelry when he pulled the ring from his sock. It was so sweet and unexpected.”

Their whirlwind romance continued with major changes, including Germieka’s move to Germany with her husband. “He found out he was going to Germany for two years, and I had to leave my family behind. It was bittersweet, but we made it work,” she says, reflecting on the challenges and sacrifices that came with following her partner overseas.

As Germieka continues to build her life in Pyeongtaek, she also reflects on what truly matters in life: the importance of staying true to oneself. “I think the most important thing is being yourself. In today’s world, it’s so easy to try to mimic others and fit in,” she explains. “I can see someone and think, ‘Wow, you’re so beautiful,’ and then the next day, I might change my look, but it’s not authentic. You lose what makes you unique.”

She continues, emphasizing the need for individuality in a world full of trends. “Social media is beautiful, but it can also make everyone look the same. I want to see people who are unique—who aren’t afraid to express themselves. If you want to dye your hair green, do it! If you want to wear something bold, wear it. Just be yourself, no matter what anyone else says.”

Germieka’s journey in Pyeongtaek serves as a reminder of the beauty in staying true to one’s self and the importance of following one’s heart, both in love and in life. Whether navigating love, family, or the quest for individuality, her story is a testament to the power of embracing life’s challenges with authenticity and courage.
