South Korea is about to enjoy one of the longest holiday breaks in years, as National Foundation Day (Oct. 3), Chuseok (Oct. 6), and Hangeul Day (Oct. 9) line up to create an extended 황금연휴 (hwang-geum yeon-hyu). The term literally means “golden holiday”, and it’s used when several public holidays connect to form an unusually long break.
The holiday is expected to bring crowded highways, packed train stations, and busy airports as people travel across the country to visit relatives or take advantage of the time off. Tourist destinations at home and abroad are also preparing for a surge of visitors.
This rare alignment of holidays offers a unique chance for rest, celebration, and travel, a true golden holiday week to mark the change of season.
