Lawmakers and local officials are advancing discussions on extending the Special Act on Support for Pyeongtaek City and related areas in connection with the relocation of U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) bases, a law that has underpinned regional development since 2004.
The legislation was originally enacted to support infrastructure, economic projects, and community programs tied to Pyeongtaek’s role as a hub for USFK following major base relocations.
With its current expiration scheduled for December 31, 2026, the National Assembly’s National Defense Committee has approved an amendment to extend the law’s effective period by four years, until 2030.Pyeongtaek City has welcomed the committee’s decision, stating that the extension is essential for completing ongoing projects, including attracting international schools, expanding industrial zones, finishing the redevelopment of returned base lands, and maintaining momentum for long term regional growth.
In particular, Mayor Jung Jang seon described the move as a key step toward stabilizing development linked to the USFK presence and advancing Pyeongtaek’s vision as an international city.
The bill will now move to the Legislation and Judiciary Committee before a final vote in the full Assembly later this spring.
