This coming Monday, May 25, is an official public holiday in South Korea. Buddha's Birthday (부처님오신날) falls on May 24 this year, but since that date lands on a Sunday, the following Monday has been designated as a substitute public holiday (대체공휴일). This means schools, government offices, and most businesses will be closed.
Buddha's Birthday is a national holiday in Korea that celebrates the birth of Gautama Buddha. Across the country, Buddhist temples hold lantern lighting ceremonies and cultural events in the days leading up to the holiday. The Lotus Lantern Festival, also known as Yeondeunghoe (연등회), is recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage and is one of the most visually striking celebrations of the season.
