Yongsan US Military Base Relocation to Pyeongtaek Extended Until 2030

The South Korean government has officially extended the Special Act on Support for Pyeongtaek in Connection with the Relocation of US Military Bases (미군이전평택지원법) until December 31, 2030. The amendment was approved at a cabinet meeting on June 2 and formally promulgated on June 9.

Originally enacted in 2004, the law has now been extended for the fourth time, following previous extensions in 2011, 2017, and 2020. The latest extension covers the completion of remaining tasks, including the remediation of returned military land, the sale of vacated sites, revenue collection through land transactions, and ongoing development projects in Pyeongtaek. The Ministry of National Defense stated that the extension was necessary to ensure the stable completion of the relocation program, as several local development projects remain unfinished.

At the local level, the extension means that national government support for Pyeongtaek's development will remain in place through the end of the decade. As former military sites are progressively cleaned up and returned, the city is expected to benefit from newly available land and the development opportunities it creates. The head of the Ministry's US Forces Korea Relocation Project described the extension as an important milestone toward the successful completion of the relocation program.
