The Alpha Ammunition Depot area in Godeok International New Town is entering a new phase following the lifting of its military facility protection zone. Covering approximately 1.33 million square meters, the area had long been subject to restrictions that limited land use and development in the surrounding new town. The ammunition stored at the site was relocated earlier this year, paving the way for the lifting of the military restrictions.
However, the lifting of the protection zone does not mean that development can begin immediately. The site remains under U.S. military occupation, so the return of the land, environmental assessments and cleanup, and subsequent land acquisition procedures must still be completed. Pyeongtaek City plans to work with the Ministry of National Defense, U.S. Forces Korea, and LH to move these procedures forward.
Once these steps are completed, the city plans to transform the site into a memorial landmark and cultural space featuring exhibition, performance, educational, experiential, and public rest areas. The site is also planned to serve as a key part of a cultural belt connecting major facilities such as Hamhaksan Park, the new city hall, Pyeongtaek Art Center, the museum, and the central library.
