The most practiced sport in Korea is Taekwondo, a martial art. Most Korean children grow up learning it from childhood because it is easy to learn and it does not require any equipment. Today, we will invite you to step into the world of Taekwondo!
Taekwondo is the most well-known form of Korean martial arts and it represents the Korean spirit. It is characterized by attack and defense techniques that involve kicks, strikes, and blocks using the hands, legs, and other parts of the body.
To practice Taekwondo, you must wear a uniform called a “dobok,” consisting of a set of white garments. The collars of the upper garment serve as a way of distinguishing doboks. For instance, the color of a “Pum Dobok” (worn by people under 15 years old) is black and red, while a “Dan Dobok” (worn by people 15 and older) is all-black. Note that it is obligatory to wear a dobok to take a level (“dan“) assessment.
Over the dobok, you wear a colored belt according to your level. The belt color order is as follows: white – yellow – green – blue – brown – red – black. When If you pass a level assessment, you are promoted to the next level and earn a higher different -–colored the next belt color).
Taekwondo practice is called “pumsae”, and you can earn promotion as you master different techniques. Pumsae constitutes all actions of Taekwondo such as kicks, strikes, and blocks. Therefore, if you manage to learn all the various types of pumsae, you will have mastered Taekwondo.
