Looking into the characteristics of Korean buses

Koreans use buses a lot among the different transportation methods. If you end up visiting Korea, you’ll be able to frequently see different colored buses passing by. What could the different colored buses mean?

Largely speaking, there are city buses, intercity buses and express buses. You can ride the city buses that operate in that area by paying the designated amount in cash or by tapping the transport card. Transport cards are called T-Money and can be purchased at convenience stores. City buses are usually blue or green in color and are the most commonly seen bus! For intercity and express buses, you must purchase a ticket prior to riding. Also, it is recommended to check the departure time and destination displayed on the front of the bus before boarding!

If you ride a bus, the yellow or pink seats are seats for handicapped. Sometimes there is a sticker for notice. This seat is for elderly adults, parents with children together, pregnant woman and disabled people to use. While it is okay to sit there normally, if a handicapped person boards the bus, it is part of Korean culture to give way the seat. When boarding the bus, you board through the front door and get off via the back door! Sometimes when there are a lot of people on the bus, there are cases where people get on and off at both doors but people normally board/get off at the designated doors.

If you're confused whether or not the bus will stop at your destination, don't be afraid to ask a Korean for help! Before getting off the bus, press the stop bell and the bus will stop at that station :) If you used a card, you need to tap it again when getting off. Also, please do not forget that you must wear a mask when riding a bus due to COVID-19!
