Obtaining a Driver’s License in Korea

In Korea, sometimes, it’s more convenient to drive a car than to take public transportation. Some of you may want to get a driver’s license in Korea. How can you obtain one in Korea?

There are two types of driver’s licenses in Korea, levels 1 and 2. You can go to a driver’s license academy and register for the level you want to acquire. When visiting the school, you must bring your passport and alien registration card. To obtain a driver’s license, there are three steps: writing, driving, and on-road driving exams. You must pass the minimum score to get a license.

Before you take the written test, you must get a physical examination in the examination room within the test site or at a medical institution. The written test is conducted after 3 hours of training, and if you pass the written test, you take the driving course test after taking 4 hours of class. Once you pass the driving  test, you take the on-road driving test after taking 6 hours of class.

There are no separate English subtitles provided for the 3 hours of training for the written test. However, there is no need to worry because you can study the written test through English textbooks and take the test in English. Also, you can go to the website below and try solving the written test questions in English. Click on the category that says [영어]!

The driving test verifies the ability to operate a car and pass several courses at the practice area within the test site. During the on-road driving test, you will be driving directly on the road outside the test site. In the case of on-road driving, the test is conducted with an instructor in the passenger seat.

If you pass all three exams, you will be notified by the driver’s license school that your license is issued! Pick up your license, and you’re done!

There are driving academies near Pyeongtaek where foreigners can take license classes, such as Daedong Automobile Driving Academy and Samsung Automobile Driving Academy. You can visit them and check them out!
