To many of those who own pets, pets are considered family. Often, pet owners bring their pets overseas for long-term business trips or a move-in from another country, and I am sure many of you who are reading this article have come to Korea with your pets as well. As “how” to bring pets overseas often becomes troublesome for many owners, we are here to discuss with you about pet transportation services today.

Primarily, animals that are allowed to travel through airlines include dogs, cats, and pet birds. The number and standard of eligible pets for transportation may vary depending on the airline you are using, so it is always important to check the information ahead of time. Although the details may vary, the airlines will mutually require the owner to bring a cage with them, with the approval of the airline prior to the flight. For specifications, you can check with each airline!

Asiana Airlines

As for Asiana Airlines, pets are eligible for the cabin if the weight of the pet (including the cage) is 7 kg or less. The sum of three sides of the pet carrier must be 115 cm or less, and the maximum height of the cage is 21 cm or less (soft cages must be 26 cm or less and must be stowed under the seat.)

If the pet’s size exceeds the cabin baggage specifications, you must transport your pet as checked baggage, and the pet’s weight (including the cage) must be 45 kg or less, with the sum of three sides of the cage being 285 cm or less, as well as the height being 84 cm or less. The number of in-cabin or checked pets may be restricted or refused entry depending on the type of aircraft and route.

The airline must be contacted by the owner before the flight for a pet transportation approval via phone (1588-8000), and you must have all APHIS (Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service) documents ready for the according country/area. Once you file a health certificate and rabies vaccination certification to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, you will be able to receive a health certificate for animal quarantine. The ministry only operates from 9AM to 6PM, so you must get the certification issued ahead of time. For more information, visit Asiana Airlines website using the link below!

Korean Air

When traveling with Korean Air, dogs, cats, and pet birds over the age of 8 weeks are eligible to transport in the cabin. If transported as checked baggage, each pet must be over the age of 16 weeks. For the cabin, the pet (including the cage) must be 7 kg or less, and the pet can weigh 45 kg or less as checked baggage. To be eligible for the cabin, the sum of three sides of the pet carrier must be 115 cm or less and the maximum height of the cage is 20 cm or less (soft cases must be 26 cm or less.) If transported as checked baggage, the sum of three sides of the cage must be 291 cm or less, and height must be 84 cm or less.

Animal transportation may be restricted or refused depending on the country/area/type of aircraft, so you must call the service center (1588-2001) at least 48 hours before the flight for an affirmation. In addition, Korean Air offers a program called “SKYPETS”, where you can collect stamps per each travel with your pet for a discounted price offer or a free transit bonus. Pets must be kept in their cage, and each cage should be small enough to be stowed under the seat. The eligible cage size varies depending on the type of aircraft, so you must check with the airline after you book a flight.
