샘터분식 (Saemteobunsik) Korean Restaurant [PIEF Foreign Reporter]

The Songtan Entertainment District (SED) has some of the most diverse restaurant options available for locals and tourists to choose from. Located directly outside Osan Air Base, hidden amongst the coffee shops, kebab skewers, donut stands, and pizza joints that dominate the SED, you can find Saemteobunsik 샘터분식, a restaurant serving up healthy, traditional Korean cuisine at amazing prices. Established in 1980, it is evident that 샘터분식 has a solid group of loyal customers. The atmosphere is very welcoming and the owners seem to have memorized the orders of their frequent and loyal customers.

My discovery of this restaurant was purely accidental. Driven by a desire to immerse myself in Korean culture, my family and I stumbled into this restaurant looking to try something new. The menu posted on their wall is written entirely in Korean; however, they have a separate English menu, and their use of visuals helps the customer to confidently make selections despite a possible language barrier.

Tasty selection of ban chan

All the dishes they serve are filled with immense flavor and quality, but it is their ban chan (small side dishes served alongside the main dish) that truly make this restaurant stand out. Expecting the same ban chan the second time we frequented the restaurant, we were pleasantly surprised to find that the selection was completely different. Some of my favorites include the lotus roots, black soy beans, and, of course, the kim chi. Their bibimbap (rice mixed with veggies and a fried egg with a gochujang sauce) and spicy cold noodles are guaranteed to quench your craving for delicious Korean food. If the food isn’t enough to entice you to try 샘터분식, maybe the price tag will. My family of six can eat there for $25 and still have leftovers! I highly recommend giving 샘터분식 a try!

Bibimjjeolmyeon

If you’re someone who likes spicy food, I highly recommend trying these delicious spicy noodles (bibimjjeolmyeon). Be prepared to get a jaw workout though because they are very chewy
