Visit a cozy restaurant that specializes in wheat noodles [PIEF Foreign Reporter]

Do you want a break from some of the busy streets and chain restaurants of city life? Let me give you a suggestion for a great place to have an authentic Korean meal with a calm setting.

Last week I got to visit a restaurant named Pyeongtaek Kalguksu or Pyeongtaek Noodle Soup, located in one of the alleys of Pyeongtaek. Finding hidden gems like this is one of the best experiences to have in the city!

Though it is tucked away between narrow streets, you won’t miss its bright porch lights and prominent orange letters. When you walk thru the front door you have the option of sitting on the floor in the classic Korean style or taking a table with chairs set for four. It is a clean and relaxing dining experience.

Do you have a hard time choosing something to order when you go out to eat? Then this place is for you! They have just three tasty dishes on their menu, and with the large portion sizes you not leave hungry. First they have 돈까스 which are pork cutlets, then there is 꼭면 a large salad dish, and then the famous 칼국수 (kalguksu). Their kalguksu is a large bowl of green wheat noodles that have been soaked in spinach and were delicious!

When you get to visit you can order the kalguksu and then snack on the traditional kimchi and pickled yellow radish while you wait. It only takes a few minutes for the noodles to be brought to your table. They are served in a huge bowl brimming with broth and spices. The bowl is so full that it spills a bit on the tray the waiter carries, overflowing with goodness. Once the bowl is on your table, grab one of the small dishes you were given, pull some noodles out and let it cool on the dish. The broth keeps the noodles hot and tasty, and letting it chill on the dish for a bit allows for them to cool and be ready to eat. It is a tasty adventure you won’t want to miss out on!

This restaurant was featured on the Korean channel MBC- TV and has raving reviews!

Next time you are looking for a meal off the beaten path, try out Pyeongtaek Kulguksu. It is open Monday thru Saturdays from 1100-2100. They are closed on Sundays and have a daily break time between 1500-1700.
