As heavy downpours and strong-winded typhoons make their way toward Korea’s mainland, the number of damages and water and food-borne infectious diseases due to flood water from sewage pipes has recently skyrocketed.

However, following the proper steps during these occasions can help prevent and protect you and your loved ones. The following is a list of recommended tips to consider if or when one may be caught in such a situation.

Commonly contracted infectious diseases include Typhoid, Bacillary Dysentery, Hepatitis A, Intestinal Infections (norovirus infection, etc.)

Prevention methods and tips for infectious diseases during a flood

▲ Thoroughly wash your hands frequently for at least 30 seconds each time (especially after going out, before eating, and after using the restroom).

Drink boiled or safely packaged water, and wash or discard if contamination is suspected.

Food should be thoroughly heated, and cooked food should not be stored for long periods. Those with diarrhea or hand injuries should refrain from cooking.

Avoid getting bitten by disease-transmitting insects such as mosquitos. Remove nearby mosquito habitats such as puddles around the house, refrain from going out at night, utilize indoor mosquito nets at home, wear brightly colored long-sleeved clothing, and use mosquito repellents.

When working in a flooded area, avoid any exposure of the skin to flood water (wearing waterproof clothes and boots is recommended). If exposed, make sure to wash it off with clean water immediately.

If you experience discomfort in your eyes, avoid touching them with your hands and seek medical attention immediately.

If you experience any symptoms, such as a fever or diarrhea, seek immediate medical attention, and if you suspect any further cluster infections, report them to the nearest public health center.
