Pyeongtaek Statue of Peace: A Powerful Symbol of Remembrance and Justice for 'Comfort Women' Survivors

The Pyeongtaek Statue of Peace is one of the most iconic statues dedicated to “comfort women.” It’s a gentle reminder about the hardship that young women went through during the 2nd World War from the Japanese occupation. This statue represents survivors’ and many activists who demand an official apology from the Japanese government. According to the stone that has been erected next to the statue, the Statue of Peace expresses the spirit of anti-war and peace to protect the human rights of all those suffering from the war. 82 organizations and 758 citizens in Pyeongtaek City participated in establishing a Pyeongtaek Statue of Peace on March 1, 2017.

The statue of peace was designed by the couple Kim Seo-kyung and Kim Eun-sung. The first statue was unveiled right in front of the Japanese Embassy back on December 14,2011. Other statues followed. Six in other countries to include the US, Canada, Germany and Australia, just to name a few. This Statue of Peace is located by the Pyeongtaek Sports Complex close to the Pyeongtaek City Hall. Being in the presence of this statue was so surreal. I felt defeated and angry but at the same time hopeful for the future. In hopes that all these women get the apology and the compensation that they deserved.
