For North Americans, autumn is a time for seasonal pumpkin-spiced lattes, pumpkin pies, and comforting warm meals and treats. Lucky for all of us, one of my favorite Korean Restaurants, Hobak Pumpkin Duck Shabu-Shabu, serves delightfully decadent duck cooked INSIDE a pumpkin, year round! When visiting this shabu shabu restaurant, go with an appetite, as the dining experience includes four delicious courses and bring friends to share the experience, as a meal from Hobak is not meant for solo diners.
The first course is a broth that heats on the tabletop burner. Diners add an assortment of mushrooms, cabbage, and bok choi to the liquid as it cooks. Once the broth is heated, thin slices of "Shabu Shabu beef" are added to the broth to cook. Once the meat is cooked, diners can begin to eat either by placing broth in their bowls and dipping the cooked meat in a semi-sweet sauce or can dine beef and leaf-style. Following the Shabu Shabu meat course, the duck and pumpkin arrive at the table accompanied by a honey mustard sauce. By this point, diners may begin to feel full, but much deliciousness is still to come. The third course is wheat noodles to be added to the cooking broth to make kalguksu. Finally, glutinous rice and any leftover pumpkin are added to the remaining broth to make a porridge. The slight sweetness of the final course is a perfect way to end this delectable meal.
Hobak Pumpkin Duck Shabu-Shabu has two locations in Pyeongtaek, and they share the same delicious menu. The base price for two diners is 50,000 won, and the price increases with each additional diner. Despite the higher meal cost, this special restaurant is not to be skipped! Enjoy every bite of the outstanding hobak (Hangul for pumpkin) and duck this fall or year round!
