Suneung, the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) or the Korean SATs. In fact, it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that it's the most crucial exam they'll ever take, as it's the standardized test recognized by South Korean universities. It's quite distinct from regular high school tests in several ways.

For starters, Suneung is an exam that takes a grueling 9-hours, from 8:40 in the morning till 5:40 in the afternoon. The exam consists of five subjects: Korean (45 questions), Mathematics (30 questions), English (45 questions), Korean History (20 questions), and an optional Second Language (30 questions). All questions are either multiple choice or short answer questions. Some may think it is easy, however, each question is composed of lengthy paragraphs. Therefore, being knowledgeable in the subject matter is crucial, but equally important is the skill of efficient time management.

Suneung is taken on the third Thursday of November, and this year the special day lands on November 16th. Banks, stores, companies, open later to reduce traffic, ensuring there are no exam takers arriving late. Even planes adjust their flight paths to avoid flying over exam areas, so there are little to no distractions. Lastly, parents, friends, and various organizations cheer and encourage the Suneung exam taker all the way to the entrance of the exam area.

Many students who feel unready or unsatisfied with their results are willing to wait a whole year for a chance to retake the exam, all for the sake of entering a top-tier university. The score achieved in Suneung directly correlates with the quality of the university one can enter, and, by extension, the future opportunities and prospects that lie ahead.

The pressure that Korean students face in the lead-up to Suneung is immense. High school seniors often attend multiple academies and sleep, averaging just around 5 hours a night, as they study tirelessly day and night. As the exam day approaches, the anxiety and tension build up. So, if you happen to know someone taking Suneung on November 16th, please extend your support and encouragement.
