Creator’s Insight: Korean Folk Play Performances at Korea Soriter

Have you ever heard about Pansori? Pansori is a kind of Korean folk play. I went to the Korea Soriter Arts Center to watch a Pansori performance. This arts center is home to various exhibits made by local artists and other prominent Korean artists.

Operated with the vision of "Happy Korea, Soriter Center where tradition and modernity meet" the Korea Soriter Arts Center is a prominent tourist recreation space in Gyeonggi-do, providing a brief view of Pyeongtaek Lake. Situated in the Pyeongtaek Lake Tourist Complex, the facility spans 8,000 square feet and includes a 560-seat concert hall dedicated to the master of Korean traditional music, Ji Young-hee. It also features an outdoor concert hall, a recording studio, the Ji Young-hee Gugak Center, and a modern music library.

"The Old Man and the Sea” pansori is performed by pansori singer Lee Ja-ram, an intangible cultural performer active in South Korea and abroad. Written and composed by Lee Ja-ram based on Hemingway's novel, Lee Ja-ram compresses the vast original novel into her own witty imagination and fills the stage with fans, drums, and her own vocals. The audience goes beyond simply watching and listening to the story but creates a stage with the sound tracker.

The audience in the concert hall were fascinated by her stupendous performance. In the case of Korean traditional music and pansori performances, it is difficult for me to enjoy them because there was a limited amount of people allowed in. So, the pansori performance was much better than I expected.

If another performance opens in the future, I will definitely attend it and recommend it to other people.
