Pyeongtaek Station Is Getting a Major Makeover

A large-scale urban regeneration project is currently underway in front of Pyeongtaek Station, with completion targeted for December 2026. The city is investing 80.8 billion KRW to transform the 12,000-square-meter plaza area into a citizen-centered cultural space.

The new Complex Cultural Plaza (복합문화광장) will feature an outdoor performance hall, green relaxation areas, a central "Grand Arcade" with flowing water, a media wall, and landscape lighting. A 200-meter car-free pedestrian street will also be created, stretching from the station plaza to Parkae Hospital and designed with a motif inspired by the Pyeongtaek River. An underground walkway connecting key locations in the area, along with a new underground parking facility with 201 spaces, will complete the development.

Construction began in July 2025 and is currently ongoing. Due to work around the Pyeongtaek Station Ogori Intersection, some lanes are temporarily closed, and traffic congestion may occur. The city recommends using detour routes or public transportation whenever possible during the construction period.

Former Pyeongtaek Mayor Jung Jang-sun described the project as an effort to transform the previously chaotic and congested area around Pyeongtaek Station into an open, citizen-centered space. He added that the city would do its utmost to complete the project as quickly and safely as possible.

Once completed, the plaza is expected to become one of Pyeongtaek's most distinctive public spaces, replacing a vehicle-dominated and congested area with an open, walkable cultural hub at the heart of the city.
