South Korea is celebrating Chuseok, one of the country’s most important traditional holidays, today, September 25. The three-day holiday runs from September 24 to 26, giving families time to gather and celebrate together.
Often referred to as “Korean Thanksgiving,” Chuseok is a time for families to share traditional food, visit relatives and honor their ancestors. Some families hold charye, a traditional ancestral memorial ceremony, while others visit family graves to pay their respects.
One of the most iconic Chuseok foods is songpyeon, half-moon-shaped rice cakes filled with sesame, chestnut or bean paste and traditionally steamed over pine needles.
Gift-giving is another popular Chuseok tradition, with fruit, traditional foods, Spam and cosmetics among the gift sets commonly exchanged during the holiday.
With Chuseok falling on a Friday this year, millions of people are traveling to their hometowns to spend time with family, resulting in heavy traffic on highways and increased demand for trains and other public transportation.
