Gaecheonjeol: Celebrating the Founding of Korea

Gaecheonjeol, also known as National Foundation Day, is a national holiday in South Korea that commemorates the founding of Gojoseon, traditionally regarded as Korea’s first Korean state.

The name Gaecheonjeol means “the day the heavens opened.” According to Korean tradition, Dangun Wanggeom founded Gojoseon in 2333 BCE, marking the beginning of the Korean people’s history.

Observed annually on October 3, Gaecheonjeol is a day to reflect on Korea’s history, cultural heritage, and the traditions that have been passed down through generations.

Various ceremonies and cultural events are held across Korea to mark the holiday, making Gaecheonjeol an important occasion for celebrating the country’s historical roots and national heritage.
