Koreans enjoy eating Tteok(Rice cake). As for well-known Korean food to foreigners, there are Tteokbokki and Tteokguk, and Koreans even make cakes out of Tteok! As bakeries are easily found, there are many Tteok shops in Korea. If you visit a Tteok shop, you will notice that it is difficult to guess what is inside the Tteok. Today, we will explain what Tteok is, using some pictures!
[ Garae Tteok ]
Garae Tteok is made of steamed rice powder and is characterized by its round and long shape. There is nothing inside it. Being the basic Tteok, it is often used for different types of cooking. Garae Tteok is used for making Tteokbokki and Tteokguk. You can slightly bake it and eat after dipping it in honey or grain syrup. You can also discover a different flavor when you put it in ramen after cutting it into thin pieces.
[ Kul Tteok ]
“Kul” means honey in Korean. As the name suggests, this Tteok has sweet honey inside. Since it is visually pretty and the size is just perfect for one bite, everyone likes this. If you want to try Tteok for the first time, we do recommend Kul Tteaok!
[ Siru Tteok ]
Siru Tteok is made of rice powder and red beans. In Korea, when you move to a new town, you normally distribute Siru Tteok to your neighbors to say hello with kindness. This is part of Korean custom. Siru Tteok, which can be mistaken as Tiramisu because of the red beans, can be best enjoyed when it is served warm. The red beans can easily drop, so pay attention not to drop them while eating.
[ Mujigae Tteok ]
Colorful Mujigae Tteok is considered a representative Tteok of Korea. In particular, children are fond of it due to its pretty color and shape. It is a kind of “fun” Tteok for you can try a variety of sweet flavors by color.
