Korean spicy / hot food Level 1: Tteokbokki

From ancient times, Koreans enjoy eating spicy food. If you want to be brave enough to try spicy food in Korea, we do recommend Tteokbokki among many other options! When it comes to the spicy degree, it varies from one snack bar to another. They usually offer spicy flavors classified into degree of intensity. Try sweet and spicy Tteokbokki!

Tteokbokki is a stir-fry dish of Garae Tteok (rice cake) cut into an appropriate size mixed with cabbage and fish cakes. In general, it is made with red chili paste but soy sauce is sometimes used to one's liking. It is also possible to make Tteokbokki with black soybean sauce or curry sauce. This kind of Tteokbokki is not very hot, so it is recommended to children as well!

Koreans eat Tteokbokki along with different dishes. We Koreans also love Gimbap made of ham, pickled radish, egg and rice, as well as fish cakes served with warm soup, and deep fried dishes made of squid, sweet potatoes and vegetables. These days, people like to enjoy Tteokbokki with some hot dogs cut in an appropriate size and dip it with Tteokbokki soup. Sometimes people put some beef brisket in it. This has become a popular menu for the spicy Tteokbokki is added with the unique flavor of beef brisket.
