When you drive on highways in Korea, you can find rest stops in the middle. They have many accommodations, such as sleeping room, showers, pharmacy, and nursing room. Please note that each stop has different services. The must-try at these rest stops is food, of course. Rest stops in Korea have such a diverse array of food to choose from. Let us introduce Koreans’ top favorite food at rest stops.
First are walnut cakes called hodugwaja. These are small cakes in the shape of walnuts, with red beans and walnuts inside. In particular, they are the specialty of Cheonan City, Chungcheongnam-do. When you stop by the Cheonan Rest Stop, make sure to try out their original walnut cakes. Other rest stops may or may not sell them. The red bean filling could be very hot, so be careful!
Next is sotteoksotteok. Made of sausages and tteok (rice cakes), the first syllables of each were taken to name this food. These are sausage and rice cake skewers that are grilled and brushed with sauce. To fully enjoy the food, please eat sausage and rice cake together in one bite.
Lastly, grilled squid with butter is another popular item. The tasty aroma will attract you as you drive into the rest stop. You can’t resist it once you smell the buttery goodness. It’s so convenient to eat that you can even eat it inside your car. The chewy texture of squid with butter will give you craving for more.
There are many more delicious servings at rest stops in Korea, such as corn dogs, chicken skewers, ice cream, coffee, and dumplings. Make sure to drop by when you see one on the road!
