Popular Mobile Apps in Korea

When you're abroad, there may be things that are inconvenient. It would definitely help if you know where the locals go, what they say, and which apps they use the most. Here are some apps that Koreans use to make their lives easier. The following apps can be set in English, so try them out!

Just like WhatsApp and Facebook messenger are popular in the U.S., Kakaotalk is the messaging app used by most Koreans. It includes multiple functions in addition to text messaging, such as video chatting. The chatting window has poll (voting, location, and music functions, and you can also use various emoticons to express your feelings. There is a "gifts" button that allows you to give presents via "gifticons" (digital gift vouchers). Koreans often use this function to send presents on birthdays and other special occasion through Kakaotalk. We recommend downloading Kakaotalk to have conversations with Koreans.

The next app is Kakao T. To call a taxi, turn on the app, select the taxi option, set your destination, and call the taxi. It offers an English option, where you can enter addresses in English. However, taxi drivers often cannot speak English. If the driver calls you, it would be wise to consult a Korean next to you. Once you are successfully assigned a car, check the license plate number and take the taxi when it arrives. The navigation will take the taxi safely to your destination.

Finally, we will introduce a map application. In Korea, Naver Map or Kakao Map are preferred to Google Maps. These are used to obtain more accurate directions. When you search the address you want to go to on map apps, they tell you information such as whether it's faster to go by public transportation and how much it costs to take a taxi.
