In Pyeongtaek, there is a restaurant that specializes in mackerel called Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda (“mackerel turned into a masterpiece”). This restaurant is designated as a “Good Restaurant” by Pyeongtaek City, which means it has met the standards on hygiene, customer service, and quality of food.
The menu includes grilled fish such as mackerel, Spanish mackerel, and cutlassfish, braised mackerel and cutlassfish, gochujang bulgogi (beef marinated in red pepper paste), raw mackerel, and mackerel sushi. Their signature item, grilled mackerel, is 9,000 won per serving, grilled Spanish mackerel is 11,000 won, and grilled cutlassfish is 14,000 won.
Please note that one item per person must be ordered for customers seven years or older. Also, there is a self-service bar to get refills if you want more banchan (side dishes) after finishing the first round.
Mackerel is grilled in a wood-fired oven, which makes the fish crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. Another popular item on the menu is raw mackerel. The slices are fresh without any fishy smell and have a rich flavor. As for the braised dishes, they might be spicy because of the seasoning in the marinade.
Because the restaurant is usually packed, they have a waiting room. Also, coffee and sikhye (sweet Korean rice beverage) are provided for drinking on the way out.
Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda is open every day from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm. On weekdays, the restaurant’s break time is between 3:30 pm and 5:00 pm. Parking is available at the front, and the restaurant is very spacious. We recommend Geodeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda for a healthy serving of mackerels.
