How to Discard Waste Properly [Most Confused Items]

In South Korea, the waste separation system is very strict. Not only do we need to discard food and general wastes separately, but we must also differentiate materials such as plastics, cans, and paper and discard them on designated days of the week. The method and days of the week for waste disposal vary depending on where you live. Today, we will explain the proper waste disposal method in Pyeongtaek.

Recently, many of you may be ordering delivery food. Please note that while clean containers can be recycled, those tainted with unwashable grease or seasoning must be discarded as general waste because they cannot be recycled. Also, ice packs that come with delivery are also hard to recycle and should be discharged as general waste. If there is a designated collection box in your area, you can drop them there.

Here are some items that are often confused. Diapers, toilet paper, foam fruit nets, fruit packaging, ceramics, and broken light bulbs and glass should be discarded as general waste as they cannot be recycled. Broken light bulbs or glass must be wrapped in newspaper and discarded as general waste. Make sure to follow this guideline because if you dump broken glass without wrapping it, the shards may tear the garbage bag and hurt those who handle the waste.

Also, plastics bags are often recycled as a separate category. Please keep in mind that this only applies to clean bags that do not have any waste inside. If it has food or stickers on it that cannot be removed, it must be thrown away as general waste. Tablecloths and comforter covers made of materials similar to plastic bags should be discarded as general waste as well.

Lastly, objects that are made of mixed materials must also be discarded as general waste. This includes CDs, DVDs, wrapping strings, stationery, and toothbrushes.

At times, it can be confusing whether an item is recyclable or general waste. When recycling next time, if the item is contaminated or made of mixed materials, make sure to dispose it with your general waste.
