Korean Traditional Cuisine Level 1: Bibimbap (Jeonju Traditional Bibimbap) 전주전통비빔밥

How about trying different Korean traditional dishes during your stay in Korea? Starting today, we will recommend Korean cuisines to you at each level (Esay-to-try Korean food standards). Aside from the place we introduce here, you can also try other restaurants that have “비빔밥 (bibimbap)” on the menu. Our recommendation today is “Jeonju Traditional Bibimbap.”

The menu includes Jeonju bibimbap, ganjang gejang jeongsik (soy marinated raw crab set), kkotge muchim (spicy raw blue crab), kkotgetang (blue crab soup), and dongtaetang (pollack soup). “Jeonju” in “Jeonju bibimbap” refers to a region in Korea famous for their bibimbap. An average bowl of Jeonju bibimbap costs 12,000 won per person.

This restaurant presents many banchan (side dishes), which is the signature style of Korean cuisine. When your order comes out, don’t hesitate to try the side dishes for they complement the meals (please note that the composition of banchan may change each time you visit). Let’s be honest, who doesn’t love extra free food?

Bibimbap is a mix of various namul (seasoned vegetables), rice, fried egg, and gochujang (red pepper paste). It’s best to use a spoon, not chopsticks, to eat bibimbap. At Jeonju Traditional Bibimbap, they serve rice in the stone pot it was cooked in. Take as much as you want for your bibimbap, mix thoroughly, and enjoy! As gochujang may be spicy, we recommend adding it gradually and tasting it each time to make sure it’s to your liking.

Jeonju Traditional Bibimbap is open from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm every day (break time is between 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm). The restaurant has a parking lot, so feel free to bring your car. Although it is prohibited for five or more people to gather together due to social distancing measures, when the COVID-19 situation comes to an end, it would be an excellent place for groups as well.

If you are ever craving some delicious bibimbap, give this place a try!
