The risk of forest fire is heightened during dry spring days. Korea Forest Service has designated “spring forest fire danger period” for Korea from February 1st to May 15th. As most forest fires are caused by human negligence, we must collectively do our part to prevent forest fires.
1. Do not use fire on mountains.
Do not carry inflammable materials and objects such as matches, lighters, and burners while you are hiking. One simple mistake could engulf the entire forest.
2. Do not trespass or enter restricted trails.
You may come across trails that are either accessible or restricted while hiking. Hiking must only take place on permitted trails, and camping or cooking must only be conducted in designated areas.
3. Report immediately if you see a forest fire.
When a forest fire is spotted, the authorities must be contacted immediately. In Korea, dial 119 for fire, 112 for police and 042-481-4119 for Korea Forest Service. When reporting a fire, it is crucial to include the location, time, and severity. If you encounter linguistic challenges, ask for help from the Korean speakers nearby.
With over 70% of Korea covered by mountains, the fire could spread to large areas instantly once it is started. We must stay vigilant around fire at all times. Remember we all have roles to play in keeping out forest green!
