There is a hidden gem inside Tongbok Traditional Market often spotted with a long lineup during lunch hour. It is famous for gimbap and mini gimbap that are only available via take-out.
Take the first alley to your right as you walk out of Tongbok public parking lot. Voila! Say hello to Kiwoon’s Gimbap.

Inside Kiwoon’s Gimbap is an open kitchen where you will see several employees relentlessly making rolls after rolls of gimbap. The difference between “gimbap” and “mini gimbap” is the size of gimbap. The regular gimbap is rolled and served in bite-sized slices. Mini gimbap features thinner and smaller rolls that are eaten one bite at a time. The components of both gimbap are similar and although the most common ingredients are danmuji (yellow picked radish), spinach, egg strips, ham, and carrot, don’t be surprised to find gimbap with ever-evolving varieties.
One order of regular gimbap (1 roll) is 3,000 won and one order of mini gimbap (5 rolls) is 3,000 won.
While basic gimbap is the lone offering at Kiwoon’s Gimbap, most gimbap places feature a wide assortment of gimbap. If you prefer variety, go bold and try cheese gimbap, tuna gimbap, pork cutlet gimbap, spicy gimbap and the endless possibilities. Gimbap is a staple on field trips or at picnics in Korea.
