Today, we will find out how to differentiate between general waste and food waste to dispose of them properly. First, how do we discard food waste? Food waste must not be watery. We need to remove moisture as much as possible and eliminate objects that are not food wastes, such as plastic bags and toothpicks. Also, please cut up large chunks such as watermelon rinds into small pieces and discard them in the food waste bags.

Food waste bags (orange) are sold at supermarkets and convenience stores in 1.5L or 3L sizes. Please dispose of food waste bags between 8:00 pm and 4:00 am at designated locations. It may be confusing at times which items are considered food waste. Here is a list of items that often cause confusion (please discard the materials below as general waste).

1. Egg shells

2. Corn husks, onion peels, and vegetable roots

3. Hard rinds such as coconut and pineapple rinds (watermelon rinds are food waste)

4. Single-use bags with used tea leaves and medicinal herbs

5. Shellfish shells and skin and bones of seafood

6. Saturated fat such as fat and intestines from meat

7. Hard bones such as beef bones

8. Food waste with toxins such as pufferfish

9. Seeds from fruits such as peach, apricot, and plums

Let's work together to recycle correctly and protect the environment. Please note that if you are caught discarding wastes in the wrong way, you may be charged a fine of less than 1 million won.
