Have you tried a traditional Korean dish called muk? Muk is jelly made by extracting starch from grains or other food sources, boiling with water, and hardening the mixture. While the starch can be derived from mung beans and buckwheat, the most common kind of muk is dotorimuk made of acorns. Consisting mostly of starch, it does not have a distinct flavor of its own, but many enjoy it for the unique texture.
You can try various dotorimuk dishes at Chamdotori Mukbapjip in Pyeongtaek. Mukbap (muk with rice and broth) dishes are 7,000 won, muk suyuk (muk with steamed pork) varies from 22,000 to 36,000 won depending on the size (S, M, L), and dotorimuk muchim (spicy tossed muk with vegetables) is 10,000 won. Mukbap can be served with cold or warm anchovy broth or with warm beef bone broth.
Naengmukbap (cold mukbap) is deliciously tart, much like the naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodle soup) broth. To enjoy this dish properly, eat the acorn jelly in the cold soup first, then add the rice to the soup and eat them together. Mixing rice with the soup brings out another texture and flavors.
Onmukbap (warm mukbap) will warm up your body. The soup tastes similar to janchiguksu (warm noodle soup), and we also recommend mixing rice and soup for this dish.
Lastly, muk suyuk is a platter of muk, steamed pork, pork rinds, and kimchi. Use the muk to wrap a piece of pork for a juicy and delicious mouthful.
Chamdotori Mukbapjip opens from 10:00 to 20:00 every day, and there is a parking space in front of the restaurant. If you want to try a dish of traditional Korean dish muk, we highly recommend this place.
