EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT KOREA'S COUNTRY AND AREA CODES

Ever wondered about Korea's area codes or how to call Korea from abroad? Let us help you put the confusion behind once and for all. We hope this article will help you get a general idea of who and/or where unfamiliar phone numbers are calling you from.

The country code for the United States is 1. Korea also has its own unique country code - 82. When making calls to Korea from overseas, you must enter +82 to begin, followed by either the mobile prefix code or the area code (the first 0 is dropped when dialing into Korea; ex. 82-10-1234-5678).

Now, let’s take a look at the local area codes.

Seoul's area code is 02, and Gyeonggi-do's is 031. Similar to the US, different regions use different area codes. Here is a chart that summarizes Korea's area codes.

Besides the country and area codes, there are additional numbers that are worth noting while residing in Korea.

As you already know, all mobile phone numbers start with 010. Occasionally, you come across numbers that start with 011, 016 and 017, but effective June of this year, the remaining 2G service is set to terminate and all such mobile prefix numbers will become obsolete. Another number worth noting is 070, which is the prefix for internet phones.

In addition to these, there are 3-digit or 4-digit phone numbers that will connect you to special services or call centers.

Important numbers to note are 112 (police), 119 (fire department), and 1339 (Korea  Disease Control & Prevention Agency).

Next time your phone rings, go ahead and decipher the originating area code.
