Summary of Facts about Expressways in Korea (Speed Limit, Rest Area, Etc.)

Have you ever used expressways in Korea? People often use expressways when traveling a long distance. There are a few things you should know before driving on expressways as it is slightly different from driving inside the city!

Expressways are tollways for high-speed traffic and they are exclusive for automobiles only. Therefore, motorcycles and pedestrians are prohibited to use expressways. When you enter expressways you must pass tollgates and receive a pass. The toll is calculated based on the distance you drive on expressways. Normally it is required to pay the toll at the exit but some roads have barrier toll system for splitting the payment. The toll can be paid by either cash or credit card, so it is important to speed down when approaching the tollgate. If you feel like this procedure is too complicated, you can simply purchase and top-up the hi-pass card.

The average speed limit of expressways is 80-100km/h. The traffic law requires that every passenger on the car must wear seat belts. Failure to wear seat belts will be subject to pay fine. For young children who don’t fit in seat belts should use car seats! Furthermore, the drivers must maintain distance between cars to prevent unexpected car crash. Left turns and u-turns are strictly prohibited on expressways, so be careful not to pass the exit!

On expressways, you will see that many speed cameras are installed here and there. If the camera detects your car going faster than the speed limit, you will receive a speed ticket.

There are service stops and rest areas on the expressways. The service stops are quite an attraction, and they are furnished with well-managed restrooms, gas stations, snack bars and restaurants.

The rest areas are places where you can take a moment to park and rest. Driving while being drowsy is very dangerous, so if you start feeling sleepy, stop by a service stop or a rest area to take some rest.
