As winter is just around the corner, something that everyone may be expecting is when Korea will get its first snowfall of 2022! The earliest snowfall recorded in Korea was in Cheongju, which occurred on October 23, 1981.
* FUN FACT: 2002, 1997, and 1980 were also recorded for having some of the year’s earliest snowfall during October.
On October 10th of this year, the nation’s first snow of the season was found to have begun from portions of Mt. Seoraksan and Gwangdeok in Korea's northeastern region (nine days earlier than last year, and 24 earlier than in 2020). On the same day, the first snow was also seen from Yeonhwabong Peak of Mt. Sobaeksan, which was also analyzed nine days earlier than last year.
Unlike the last month of October, when early winter weather seemed prominent, warmer temperatures have seemed to lag around throughout most of this month of November. The Korea Meteorological Administration predicts a continuation or somewhat similarity in warm temperatures throughout the rest of this month to then dive into full-fledged winter temperatures, possibly once we enter December.
Though primal snowfall has already been recorded for this year within the high-altitude mountainous areas in Gangwon Province, there has not yet been any further recorded snowfall in other regions.
The Korea Meteorological Administration announced a one-month outlook on the 17th of this month, predicting a 40% chance of this year’s first snowfall to happen within the first to the second week of December and a 50% chance to happen within the third or fourth week of December.
