Korea’s Change to Saving the Environment: November Plastic Ban is Set to Begin!

Restrictions on the use of paper cups, plastic straws, etc. in stores starting November 24!

Beginning November 24th, disposable products such as paper cups and plastic straws will be restricted from use at cafeterias and food service locales.

Additionally, disposable shopping bags (not including paper bags) will not be allowed for use or distribution to customers at convenience stores and bakeries.

The Ministry of Environment sets to expand restrictions on the use of disposable products by the ‘Enforcement Rule Act,’ which is part of the ‘Promotion of Saving and Recycling of Resources,' newly revised on December 31st of last year.

The revised rule prohibits the use of disposable plastic straws, paper cups, and plastic stirring rods in large-scale cafeterias (cafeterias that provide meals to more than 50 people at a time) and food service businesses (general restaurants, rest-stop restaurants, bakeries, entertainment bars, karaoke bars, and contracted food service meals).

However, cup lids, cup holders, paper cup stands, napkins, etc. will not be subject to this new regulation.

Disposable and shopping bags will not be allowed within general retail businesses and bakeries such as convenience stores (over 3,000) and supermarkets (over 165). However, paper (excluding bags that contain synthetic resin coating) envelopes and shopping bags will be excluded for restriction.

Vinyl-containing umbrellas will also be banned in large-scale stores, and disposable cheering items made of plastic will be prohibited in sports facilities.

According to the ‘Resource Recycling Act,’ those who use or provide disposable products prohibited from use for free are set to be fined up to 3 million won.

An official from the Ministry of Environment's resource circulation policy mentions, "Reducing the use of disposable products is the core of the plastic reduction policy. All members of society are encouraged to participate eagerly.”

Active promotions of the new restriction policy will continue to be set as the action date gets nearer.
