Looking to experience some first-hand history? Take part in Pyeongtaek city’s 2022 On the Way to Meet the King Parade!
Also known as the ‘Gaeksari Storytelling Experience Festival’ in Pyeongtaek city marks the festival’s eighth running year as a large-scale event.
Organized by Pyeongtaek city and its co-sponsor of the Cultural Heritage Administration and Gyeonggi-do Province, this vibrant cultural property project is set to become a cultural excavation and utilization project of the Paengseong-eup Gaeksa.
According to the Pyeongtaek city government, the parade line is expected to include 3,000 volunteers participating in the parade event, including Pyeongtaek citizens and USFK families.
This parade will stage a reenactment of the traditional ‘Parade of the Governor’ set to begin from Paengseong Administrative Welfare Center and arrive at Paengseong-eup Gaeksa, where the ‘Manggwolrye' ritual experience will also be held separately.
During the Joseon Dynasty, ‘Manggwolrye’ was a ritual that would be held on the first and 15th day of every month to honor the palace with honorable bowing and the use of a ‘Jeonpae’ or rod symbolizing the king.
Paenseong-eup Gaeksa was once used as a distillery and private home during the Japanese colonial period and as a guesthouse where officials and foreign envoys would accommodate.
As part of a Saengsaeng Cultural Heritage Project, this event has been selected by the Cultural Heritage Administration as an eight-year project that is being carried out to discover local cultural assets while introducing them to local residents.
Those who wish to participate in the parade or reenactment of the Manggwollye ritual are welcome to apply free of charge:
