Pyeongtaek City’s Crackdown on Illegal Waste Incineration & Dumping

Pyeongtaek City announced on November 1st the enforcement of a public-private joint crackdown on illegal dumping and incineration of household waste, which will last until the end of the year.

As long-term social distancing measures have been lifted after the COVID-19 outbreak, a special crackdown team consist of city hall officials and members of self-sustaining organizations to crack down on susceptible waste emission times (e.g., early mornings and evenings when most household wastes are more likely to be most accumulated).

Target items that will be searched for will include the use of standard plastic bags, the attachment of large-scale waste stickers, the discharge of mixed waste, the failure to comply with discharge time, and the incineration of household waste and agricultural products.

Pyeongtaek City continues to manage susceptible areas, install warning boards for unauthorized dumping, and distribute information banners and leaflets to promote its eradication of local unauthorized disposal and illegal incineration. Fines of up to 1 million KRW or less are set to be imposed on those who violate any of the city’s ‘zero-tolerance’ waste management regulations.

The city has so far detected about 973 cases of illegal waste dumping and 45 instances of unlawful incineration just this year and has imposed a total fine of 158 million won.

A city official said, "We ask citizens to voluntarily participate in creating a cleaner Pyeongtaek by actively cooperating with the use of agricultural byproduct shredders rather than incineration to help reduce fine dust pollution and the amounts of household wastes."
