Chobok: Embrace the Korean Summer with Traditional Dishes

Sambok is a period in Korea that aligns with the summer season, typically occurring between July and August. Sambok consists of Chobok (first), Jungbok (second), and Malbok (third), and it is recognized as the three hottest days of summer.

Chobok marks the first day of Sambok and holds great significance for Koreans as a time to regain health and vitality. Special precautions are believed to be necessary during this period.

Chobok is a time to enjoy the coolness of the Korean summer and consume nutritious foods to replenish energy. It is believed that by consuming specific dishes, individuals can replenish energy, maintain the balance of yin and yang in the body, and endure the hot summer with good health.

During Chobok, Koreans indulge in a variety of delicious foods. One representative dish is Samgyetang, a nutritious chicken soup made by simmering a whole chicken stuffed with glutinous rice, garlic, jujubes, and ginseng. This hearty meal helps replenish energy and strengthen the immune system, enabling individuals to withstand the summer heat. Samgyetang combines chicken and ginseng, ingredients are known for their ability to generate heat in the body. By indulging in this nourishing meal, one warms their intestines and restores their body's energy levels, combating the summer heat most delightfully.

Another traditional dish is Naengmyeon, a cold noodle dish made from buckwheat or sweet potato starch. It is served in an icy broth and accompanied by toppings such as sliced beef, pickled radish, cucumber, and a hard-boiled egg. This refreshing dish provides relief from the hot weather while satisfying the taste buds.

Additionally, various seasonal fruits such as watermelon are consumed during this time to replenish fluids and provide essential vitamins and minerals.

Sambok reflects the vibrant celebrations deeply rooted in Korean culture, where food, family, and shared experiences intertwine to create lasting memories.
