Now that the climate crisis has become more serious than ever, you might be wondering what you can do in your daily life to make a difference. Maybe recycling? Using more sustainable products? Supporting small, local businesses? What if I told you that you could do all three in one place? Just visit Chorok Soup, a zero waste shop located in Bijeon 2-dong!

Chorok Soup has been providing zero waste products to Pyeongtaek for over two years now, and their selection is impressive. They have a variety of everyday items like reusable straws, reusable shopping bags, compostable toothbrushes, shampoo bars, and more. They even carry products that can be difficult to find in Korea, such as toothpaste tablets (no plastic packaging!) and soap nuts for an eco-friendly laundry alternative. The store also takes pride in selling many domestically-produced items.

Another star of the store is its bulk section. Chorok Soup offers a variety of both dry and wet bulk products, from popcorn kernels to different types of teas, laundry detergent, and even fabric softener. Just bring your own reusable container (I brought a used plastic shampoo pump bottle that I had washed out), take the tare on the scale (provided by the store), fill up the bottle, and then weigh the contents to get the price. The owner is very friendly and willing to help if you have any issues.

Finally, the store also has recycling receptacles for difficult-to-dispose trash like bottle caps, paper milk containers, and multilayer packaging (밀균팩). Most residences in Korea do not offer receptacles for these items, so they must be thrown in the general waste. But if you bring them to Chorok Soup (clean them first!), you can be assured that they will be recycled.

Although we can't save the world individually, if we work together, we can make a positive impact on the climate crisis. Luckily, businesses like Chorok Soup store are here to help!
