Wanting to experience a traditional Korean Market? Tongbok Market is one of the biggest traditional markets in the Pyeongtaek area. They have so many vendors that sell everything from food to clothing and anything in between. This is a great place to shop for farm fresh vegetables, meat, or if you want to eat out there are tons of different foods and snacks to try. You will not leave disappointed.

The vendors have any sort of Korean snack or food that you can imagine and even some cuisines that are not strictly Korean such as Pho. Some of the food you can grab include: dumplings, Kimbab, sweet and sour chicken, rice cakes, donuts, hotteok, bungeo-ppang, tanghulu, to name a few.

Some things that I thought were interesting and that I do not routinely see are: pigs’ heads, whole pig legs, live fish swimming in tiny aquariums, live shrimp in baskets, silkworm soup, and fried sting ray.

This is definitely a place to experience as you are exploring the Pyeongtaek area filled with customs and traditions. One tradition that I learned about was gifting a pig’s head to a new business owner which will bring good luck and prevent misfortune to the new business.

You can get to this market with any of the public transit systems, specifically bus #1220 outside of the walk-in gate from Camp Humphreys or if you are at Pyeongtaek Station it is about a10-minute walk. This market runs every day with the bigger event days being held on the days in the month ending with 5 or 0. This can be more convenient than the 3/8ths market that runs in the Pyeongtaek ville outside of Camp Humphreys since that market is only on the days ending on 3 and 8.

Put this on your list as you are exploring the many things Pyeongtaek has to offer.
