Korea Celebrates Family Month in May with Children's Day, Parents' Day, and Teachers' Day

In Korea, the month of May holds special significance as it is dedicated to celebrating family members and teachers. Referred to as "Family Month," this period is marked by three important days: Children's Day, Parents' Day, and Teachers' Day.

Children's Day (어린이날) - May 5
Children's Day in Korea, celebrated on May 5, was first introduced in 1923 by Bang Jeong-hwan, a dedicated advocate for children's rights and independence. This public holiday offers parents a chance to pause from their busy schedules and enjoy quality time with their children. Families mark this festive occasion with various fun activities, such as visits to parks and amusement venues, and by showering their children with gifts and treats.

Parents' Day (어버이날) - May 8
Parents' Day is a significant family event in Korean culture, dedicated to honoring and celebrating parents annually. Unlike many countries that celebrate Mother's Day and Father's Day separately, Korea observes Parents' Day on May 8. Originally, May 8 was designated as 'Mother's Day' in 1956, but in 1973, it was changed to 'Parents' Day' to include both parents. On this day, children show their gratitude and love by giving their parents handmade carnations, writing heartfelt letters, and sharing family meals together.

Teachers' Day (스승의날) - May 15
Teachers' Day, observed on May 15, is a day for expressing gratitude to teachers. While not a public holiday, students still attend school as usual but surprise their teachers with various gifts or activities. On this day, students show appreciation to their teachers with carnations and cards.

Throughout May, Korea emphasizes the values of respect, gratitude, and familial love, celebrating the essential roles of children, parents, and teachers in building a strong, supportive community.
